Why This Matters

The performing arts still don’t reflect the wider world.

The talent was never the problem.

Barriers still shape who gets to create, lead and be seen — from access and income to whose voices, experiences and ideas are valued.

The result?Too many people are still missing from the story.

22% of the UK population is disabled — but only around 6% of the arts workforce is.*

7 in 10 shows don’t offer basic access like BSL, captioning or audio description.*

Only 9.8 % of cultural leaders are from ethnic minority backgrounds.*

The performing arts sector is described as ‘inhospitable to parents’, especially mothers.*

40% of disabled people miss cultural events because they’re unsure access needs will be met.*
