Our very own Claire Hodgson was invited to lead enthusiastic festival-goers in an attempt to beat the world record for the largest EVER disco dance!
If you caught her onstage in Mid Life, you’ll know Claire is no stranger to the disco. Claire co-choreographed a routine to Sister Sledge’s classic We Are Family with, appropriately enough, the help of her brother Tom. The aim was to bust through the previous record of 324 dancers.
I grew up doing competitive disco dancing with my brother and sister and the love of it has never left me. For me, disco is a liberating style of dance – easy to learn, fantastic fun to do!
We Are Family by Sister Sledge is a classic track – what an incredible opportunity to create a routine for it! – Claire Hodgson
The routine was simple, easy to learn, and could be performed by disabled and non disabled people alike, and the public turned out in droves to support the effort. And…. utterly smashed the record with a whopping 598 dancers! Congratulations to everyone who took part – it was a joyous occasion for everyone involved.
Also at Camp Bestival in 2022, our friends and partners Cirque Bijou created a spectacular finale for the festival – Disco Inferno. This was choreographed by Diverse City Co Artistic Director Claire Hodgson alongside Nandi Bhebhe.
Disco Inferno included a range of diverse dancers, aerialists and performers, including a duet between Rosie Rowlands and Daryl Beeton, an aerial crane show performance with Tilly Lee Kronick, Helen Parke, Elena Marina and Rebecca Solomon, and dance performance by Jess Skelton, Jodie Cole, Claire Hodgson, Nandi Bhebhe, Ade Sowemimo, Eleni Edipidi, Soroya
Marchelle, Ruby Gaskell and Amber Lavina. The costumes were designed by Lara Skowronska.
