A Journey of Inclusive Creativity
When Dave Young first joined Diverse City’s youth theatre in 2007, he was just 12 years old and full of ambition. “We want to perform at the Olympic Opening Ceremony,” he told Joint Artistic Director Claire Hodgson. This was the push Claire needed to collaborate on a large-scale project that at first glance might have seemed impossible…
Fast forward to 2012, and Dave played a central role in the opening of the Olympic Sailing events. The moment not only fulfilled his dream, but also sparked his journey as a performance poet, writer, Director, trustee and activist. Dave’s story demonstrates the power of dismantling the barriers to creativity so we can all collaborate and thrive on an equal footing.
The Shouting Mute
Today, Dave—also known as The Shouting Mute—is an internationally recognised artist and a passionate advocate for AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication). He writes and performs poetry, directs theatre productions, and mentors young people who use communication aids, helping others find their creative voice.
In 2023, Dave founded The Shouting Mute CIC, a disabled-led company supporting Communication Aid Users in developing their artistic practice and sharing their stories.

Exciting New Work: Meltdown
Through his ground-breaking work, Dave continues to challenge assumptions and champion inclusion. Dave is currently developing Meltdown, an innovative new show co-produced with Diverse City. This thought-provoking project explores how technology can be a force for equality.
