Transformation in the Arts – How Diverse City is Leading the Way

Advice & Tips | News | Opportunities

At Diverse City, we believe in the power of stories—those that are too often unheard and those waiting to be told.

Did you know…

  • Our Next Generation Residency is an immersive training programme for D/deaf, disabled, neurodiverse and non-disabled individuals from across the UK.
  • It’s more than training—it’s transformation. 95% of participants reported feeling more confident and connected to the arts industry.
  • 50% went on to further training or professional opportunities.
  • In 2023-24, 42% of those attending regular training progressed into professional pathways and training. These included  National Centre for Circus Arts, Bird College of Music & Dance, and Winchester University. Others secured agents or professional work in TV, film, theatre, and music.

This isn’t just about individual success—it’s about shifting the arts as a whole.

Why This Work Matters

D/deaf and disabled people make up 21% of the UK population, but only 6% of the arts workforce. Barriers like inflexible practices and inaccessible training don’t just exclude individuals—they limit what the arts can achieve as a whole.

That’s why we focus on collaboration. By working with cultural venues, professional artists, and communities across the country, we’re building a stronger arts sector where:

  • Unheard stories and exciting new talent take centre stage.
  • The next generation of artists is equipped to lead the way.
  • Audiences experience richer, more diverse performances that reflect the world we live in.

The Impact

Through this programme, we’re seeing real change:

  • Participants gain new skills, connections, and confidence, with many going on to higher education, professional training, or careers in the arts.
  • Cultural venues become more confident in welcoming diverse talent and inclusive practices.
  • The entire arts sector grows stronger and more representative.

As leaders in fair representation, we’re proving that when the arts include everyone, everyone benefits.

Join the Journey

We’re not just making shows—we’re making a shift. And we really mean it. Here’s how you can support this work:

  • Get involved—whether you’re an artist, venue, or supporter, we’d love to collaborate.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
