Equality and diversity for the arts

A tribute to Garry Robson

Garry Robson

1952-2024

A statement from Joint Artistic Director of Diverse City, Jamie Beddard, who valued Garry as a friend, colleague, and voice for disabled artists for over 30 years.

The news that Garry Robson has passed away is a terrible shock to those who knew, worked with and loved him. Garry’s trails of friendship, influence and work spread far and wide.  A prolific artist, advocate and trouper, last year he played Waldo in Extraordinary Bodies’ national tour of Waldo’s Circus of Magic and Terror.

He was the ring-man of that show just as he was in life, conjuring up and brilliantly holding so many threads as both showman and person. He was prolific across theatre, television and film, not to mention the gigs and simply holding court in bars and greenrooms.

He effortlessly crossed boundaries between disability arts and mainstream, theatre and music, writing, directing and performing. Along the way, creating a myriad of companies and opportunities for himself and others. He mentored, role-modelled and encouraged, and was a vital friend, colleague and voice for so many.

So Garry will be sorely missed, but his work, legacy and influence will remain. He squeezed the most out of life, and his laughter, bon vivre and shared escapades will continue to reverberate. A truly lovely bloke and force for good, Garry made the world a better place.
