Uplift Aerial

Community | Opportunities

Diverse City and G.E.M.S. Circus Arts School are joining forces to offer Uplift Aerial: a new, inclusive aerial class, for young people in the BCP area.

We are inviting the young people of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole to take to the air! A new weekly class at G.E.M.S in Southbourne,  offers young people with new skills, and a chance to improve strength and agility. Open to both disabled and non-disabled young people aged 15-30, Uplift Aerial is a chance to try something new, and have a lot of fun doing it. Support workers are available at every session so everyone can join in with confidence.
Gemma Mawson, Aerial Tutor and Director of GEMS Circus Arts School said:
“Imagine a space full of young people who can suddenly do things in the air they didn’t imagine possible! Our aerial classes not only help raise participants from the floor, but also to raise their aspirations. Classes like these give young people transferable skills which improve their quality of life and employability. Our integrated aerial coaching means young people experience a non-judgemental and accepting training environment.”
Alice Chutter, a producer for Diverse City said:
“We started piloting this inclusive aerial class for the members of our youth company in December 2022 and saw, very quickly, how these classes build strength, flexibility and confidence in young people. This has had a huge positive impact on their physical and mental health. It has been a joy to see them flourish through this weekly class and we are excited now to be able to open it out more widely. More young people in our community will be able to benefit from taking part in aerial sessions in a relaxed and supportive environment.”
Classes are every Thursday, 6.15pm – 7.45pm during term time at G.E.M.S Circus Arts School, St James Institute Southbourne, BH5 2AR.

Lessons will cost £12.50 per session, but bursary places are also available.
